Can you believe it? It’s exactly 12 months since we opened the doors to our new welding and fabrication site at Ellesmere Port and we are delighted to report that business is booming.

As we celebrate our one-year anniversary, we are incredibly proud of what we have achieved since May 2020 during a very uncertain time for the industry. But we had a clear vision; a vision of the company we wanted to be. That kind of laser sharp focus and eye on the future has served us well as we continue to grow a strong client base across the UK.

The opening of our 13,500 sq ft fabrication site at the Rossmore Trading Estate formed part of our global growth journey to deliver pressure part welding and fabrication site services. We have comfortably grown into our new facility and our onsite capabilities in fabrication allows us to offer a broader service to clients.

The new arm of the company has added a range of synergistic products and services to the existing portfolio, including pressure part fabrication and welding; component fabrication; fabrication and site services and mechanical support services.

Our Fortress Energy fabrication division joined with the already established and vibrant onsite machining team, delivering an integrated approach between the company’s machining and pressure parts division leading to an even more streamlined, responsive service.

Some key achievements in the first 12 months of business include developing a suite of weld procedures to ASME IX and to BSEN codes and aligning our new services to our existing ISO 9001 certification. Preparations are now complete to apply for ISO 45001 certification.

The experienced members of the team all bring deep industry knowledge from well-respected backgrounds working with international, multi discipline contractors.

The fabrication division is headed up by Craig Gerrard, Operations Director, who is responsible for the ongoing development, direction and performance of the division, managing UK operations and supporting overseas campaigns.

“Our biggest strength by far is our dedicated and highly qualified management team whose combined industry experience totals more than 100 years giving us a strong foundation from which to deliver innovative techniques and solutions,” said Craig.

As Operations Manager, Mark Strefford has worked on a variety of largescale projects and outages on and offshore in a career spanning 20 years to date. These scopes included exhaust and air intake overhauls, removal, overhaul and re-installation of ESD and RV Valves, plate heat exchangers as well as the removal of pressure part pipe work for jetting and inspection.

Mark is also experienced in the removal and replacement of economiser elements and has managed pressure part pipe work fabrication and installation, overseeing a number of shutdown programmes.

Gary Brennan is our Construction Manager with over 35 years-experience in Shutdown Planning & Execution and pipefitting. Gary is responsible for over-seeing and directing piping construction projects from conception to completion as well as ensuring all onsite and offsite constructions are delivered safe on time and on budget.

Last, but by no means least, is Paul Scott, our Quality Assurance Manager. Paul is responsible for our quality control standards and procedures as well as implementing a new Quality Management system.

We have an incredibly robust management team who are highly qualified and well respected within the industry bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to the company,” continued Craig.

Key works completed in the last year include fabrication and site installation of turbine pipework, containing in excess of 800 DN10 through to DN400 pressure part welds, compliant to code. We have also completed the fabrication and installation of a section of DN1800 steam exhaust duct.

Other key projects successfully delivered include:

  • Emergency repairs on a boiler package within excess of 60 tube replacements
  • Removal and installation of a 6.5t mechanical expansion joint (photograph attached)
  • Replacement of over 2400 conical air filters
  • Supply of fabricated pipe spools to the offshore industry

Fortress Energy delivers specialist capabilities to the industry with a focus on a personal approach with our clients.

“From fabrication support to on site delivery, we can offer a range of solutions to keep our clients projects on track.”

Huge credit must also go to our Managing Director, Martin Atkinson, whose support for the division has played a vital role in building team morale and development during a very challenging time for the energy industry.

Martin has very much been a part of our team’s success and we look forward to a continued period of growth with his support and direction going forward.”
